Musiala’s Late Goal Seals Bayern’s 11th Consecutive Bundesliga Crown

Jamal Musiala celebrates scoring the title-winning goal.

Bayern Munich secured its 11th Bundesliga title in a row after a thrilling final day that saw Dortmund blow its chance to end Bayern’s dominance. Dortmund needed a win at home against Mainz to claim its first title since 2012, but could only manage a 2-2 draw, while Bayern came from behind to beat Köln 2-1 thanks to a late goal by Jamal Musiala.

Dortmund had a two-point lead over Bayern at the start of the day and had planned a parade to celebrate its potential triumph. But things went wrong from the outset, as Mainz took a 2-0 lead in the first half through Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo. Dortmund also missed a penalty when Sebastian Haller, who had returned to the club in January after undergoing treatment for testicular cancer, saw his weak spot-kick saved by Robin Dahmen.

Bayern, meanwhile, had taken an early lead in Cologne through Kingsley Coman, but were pegged back by an 81st-minute equalizer by Nicklas Sule. At that point, Dortmund were on course to be champions, despite trailing in their own game. The fans at Signal Iduna Park erupted in joy as they heard the news from Cologne, but their happiness was short-lived.

In the 89th minute, Musiala restored Bayern’s lead with a powerful shot that left Köln goalkeeper Timo Horn helpless. That goal turned the tables again and put Bayern on top of the table by one point. Dortmund tried to respond, but could not find a winner against Mainz. The final whistle confirmed Bayern’s title and Dortmund’s despair.

Bayern’s players and fans celebrated their remarkable achievement, while Dortmund’s players collapsed on the pitch in disbelief. It was a cruel end to a season that had promised so much for Dortmund, but ended with another trophy for Bayern.
